Terms have also been agreed with the Colchester and East Essex Co-operative Society for its motor businesses to be added to the group from the beginning of 1995.
These comprise Peugeot and Nissan dealerships in Colchester, a Rover dealership in Clacton-on-Sea and a further Nissan dealership at Frinton-on-Sea. The group refused to disclose the value of the acquisition.
They will join the society’s Suffolk based dealerships which hold two Peugeot franchises in Ipswich and Felixstowe, as well as a Citroen, Renault, Volvo, and a Fiat, Alfa Romeo dealership in Ipswich and a Vauxhall franchise in Sudbury, which together with 11 service stations comprise the group.
The society said it expected the enlarged group to have a staff of 450 and an annual turnover approaching œ90m. This would put it among the top 50 motor retailers in the UK.
The new Sterling livery is being introduced to all the group’s outlets over the next few months.
Motor group manager David Woodard said: “We have been in Ipswich for over 60 years and the group has expanded steadily since the 1960’s. We’ve built up a competent and professional team and are looking forward to steady but significant growth over the next few years.”
