Swindon dealer begins drive to cut down on single use plastics

Hyundai and Suzuki motor dealer Pebley Beach, Swindon, has launched a drive to reduce its reliance on single-use plastics.

It has begun by asking the manufacturer of its screen wash to supply its product in solid, rather than liquid form.

This will mean that instead of using 250ml bottles of liquid, the company now mixes a single tablet on premises to achieve the same concentration of screen wash as 20 bottles.

Pebley Beach managing director Dominic Threlfall said: “While it’s nothing like Glastonbury Festival levels, where organisers eliminated a million plastic bottles by insisting on reusable drinking containers, we’re still saving 5,000 bottles a year from recycling.

“We’re also reducing our carbon footprint, as the packets of tablets are far lighter and less bulky to deliver than bottles of liquid screen wash.

“We’re hoping the idea will catch on with other businesses. Meanwhile, we’ll be looking at other ways of reducing our reliance on single-use plastics.”

Plastics are on the mind of other dealers too. Back in March, Donalds Volvo Ipswich hosted an Earth Hour event to help people learn about the effects of plastics in the local environment and oceans.

The event aimed to help educate the next generation to respect their environment.

Benjamin Grant, group marketing manager, said: “The welfare of our local environment and wildlife is really important to us so we’re hoping to see lots of people attending the event and helping us to make the coastline an even more beautiful and safe place to visit.”
