Yorkshire Co-op turns Around loss-makERS

THE MOTOR division of Yorkshire Co-op turned in static profits in the year to January 2001 at £1.

36m compared to the year before, despite turnover rising 46 per cent to £130m.
General manager Sunwin Motor Group, Mike Austin, who is in charge of the Society’s 14 dealerships across Yorkshire and Lancashire, called it a “startling performance” because the group took on three loss-making garages at the start of last year from the Farnell group – two Land Rover in Bradford and Guiseley and a Rover outlet in Guiseley.
Sunwin retained the staff and turned the dealerships “from loss into profit”, according to Austin.
Sunwin sold 5,774 used and 4,227 new cars across its network last year. Bradford Renault is Sunwin’s flagship dealership and brought in sales of £31m in 2000. It was named Renault UK Business Centre of the Year.
The group’s expansion should edge it into the Top 50 on the dealer list from its current berth at number 75.
However, Austin predicted that the company, which has a workforce of 450, would be consolidating its position in 2001, rather than “running out and buying any business available”.
