Intermotor added more products after demand rose 400 per cent
NOTTINGHAM-based car parts supplier Inter motor has seen a massive jump in demand for aftermarket diesel parts, and expects this to continue, despite the dip in new diesel sales.

According to product manager Richard Coxon, demand for replacement glow plugs has shot up by about 400 per cent since it revamped its range two years ago. This has now been expanded again, with eight additional products. Inter motor now sells 38 types of glow plug and the company is now actively marketing its replacement glow plugs.
“The growth has occurred because of the big boom we saw in diesel car sales from 1992 onwards,” said Coxon.
He believed that the jump in demand had taken place as service items for these cars have become due for renewal, and the cars started to drop out of main dealer servicing and into the independent garage sector.
“Our customers are getting switched onto the fact that they need to stock glow plugs,” he said.
Despite the overall fall back in new diesel sales, which shot up from around 12.6 per cent of the UK market in 1992 to current levels of 20 per cent, Coxon said that aftermarket demand for diesel parts was likely to be sustained in the long term because of the much expanded vehicle park of compression ignition cars.
He said that rapid growth in the diesel aftermarket had helped cover any demand shortfalls for petrol car replacement items such as distributor caps and rotor arms, as recession-hit motorists cut back on servicing or ignored it altogether.
But he maintained that Intermotor had secured some growth in this sector.
At present, the only diesel products offered by the company are glow plugs, but it is now looking to expand its product range with items like glow plug timers.
